Letter to Secretary of State: Hillary Clinton

The Honorable Hilary Clinton
Secretary of State
US Department of State
2201 C Street
Washington ,DC 20520

Dear Madam Secratary,

I write this letter on behalf of a group of Sri Lankan Americans, who are committed to the principles of democracy, transparency and accountability in governance , and above all the primary principal of minority rights.

I came to this country in 1965, on a Fulbright Scholarship,am married, with three children and two grand children . All are productive and law abiding citizens of this country, and we did support your cause when you were running for the presidency.

In your telephone conversation on the 13th of this month with the President of Sri Lanka,Hon: Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse, you acknowledged that Sri Lanka is now on the verge of defeating terrorism after nearly 30 years, and this presents a great oppurtunity to restore peace ,leading to reconstruction and rehabilitation in the country. We agree with you on this important aspect.

In a letter on February 17th 2009,to the President of Sri Lanka we said;“We appeal to you to use the good offices of the UN and its agencies to protect the Tamil people who are in between your goverment forces and the terrorist groups .We hear time and time again that you believe in a political solution to the present day problems, when the terrorists are defeated. We think the time is now, to bring about devolution and grant regional automony,or state or provincial autonomy as provided by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.“We deplore the killing of innocent people and above all Journalists, and it is high time they are given adequate protection ,and we agree with you this should be done immediately. As you are aware without a vibrant and free press there is no democracy. We are planning to appeal to the President of the USA to help the present situation in Sri Lanka without violating the soverignity of Sri Lanka.”

We would be happy if you could grant our group an interview to hear our point of view.
Thank you.

With best wishes,

Dr.C.K.Fernando
